Why you should start breathing via your nose?

There are a lot of benefits when breathing solely through your nose. I have summarized the top reasons below:

  • The nose is a miraculous filter lined with tiny hairs called Cilia. The cilia have many functions: they filter, humidify and heat or cool the air (depending on the temperature) before it enters the lungs. You can imagine this Cila, are very tiny brushes, which keeps the area, our nostrils and sinuses, clean.
  • Our nostrils and sinuses can warm up, in 2 seconds up to 10 degrees Celsius, or cool air as it enters our body. It basically protects the fine tissue in your lungs, named the Alveoli.
  • It provides more reststance than breathing through your mouth. Breathing through the nose forces us to slow down until proper breathing is trained; therefore, good nasal breathing reduces hypertension and stress. It also helps prevent us from overloading ourselves during a workout plus moisture loss during exhalation.
  • Our sinuses produce nitric oxide (NO gas), which, when brought into the body through the breath, helps fight bacteria and viruses in our body. A study even has won the Nobel prize in Medicine and Physiology 1998.
  • Breathing through the nose regulates blood pressure, it lowers the pressure and your hart rate.
  • Gas exchange (CO2 and O2) can be better regulated, since the air resistance for instance while breathing out, also has a positive effect on the gas CO2 and O2) exchange in our lungs.
  • It stimulates the absorption of O2 in our brain.
  • Your mouth is designed for eating and drinking and of course talking.
  • Your nose its designed for breathing. One funny thing is, that you can breathe through your mouth, but you can’t eat through your nose. This might be an aha moment for you.

This is quite a long list of benefits of which you can take advantage of…

How can I help you?
